It could be set in one of the other cities of Cascadia, expanding on the familiarity of the universe, but with a whole new set of people and places to learn about. I'd like to see another game in the same universe, but perhaps not starring Faith. It somehow manages to take the basic themes and messages of the original and expand upon them, despite turning some key elements upside down. Despite trying to erase all traces of the dreaded "Omnistat era", Conglomerate still relies on certain key pieces of vital infrastructure build by Omnistat, namely giant food domes in the Greylands where food is made for cities like Glass.Īll in all, Catalyst has an extremely rich tapestry of lore, and it's a great base for awesome sequels. It used to rule what is now Cascadia, and there are still lingering tensions between Omnistat and Cascadia. The first organized society to emerge after modern civilization collapsed, it's a totalitarian dictatorship which is completely locked down and isolated. We never learn much about it, as it is shrouded in mystery. In general, as a result of these facts, the Conglomerate is substantially more chaotic than the City Regime. Corporate Houses are an another level of intrigue and scheming.

And befitting their position as the nobility of Cascadia, they also engage in some classic feudal behavior like making alliances through marriages. They are led the so-called Corporate Houses, which form something akin to a noble class.

But these corporations are always scheming for more power, undermining each other through many legal and illegal means, and attempting to seize ever larger market shares. It is a union of the largest corporations which rule Cascadia. Unlike the City Regime, which is one cohesive, well-organized government, the Conglomerate is anything but. she grows more and more unhinged over the course of the game, eventually declaring all out war of extermination against the Conglomerate. As a result, Black November is composed of people from all walks of life, even people who were once a part of the ruling class.īut. Her words and her message are powerful and resonate all across society, from the lowest rungs all the way to the View. She clearly lays out all problems with Conglomerate's society and explains how it's all unsustainable and bound to implode eventually. Rebecca's speeches to Faith kinda make sense. But then they go around indiscriminately murdering civilians. Like, you want to sympathize with what they're doing. This time around, she wouldn't let anything stand in the way of her cause.īlack November has so many shades of grey. And she reformed the resistance into a new organization - Black November. The government fell apart, and the corporations stepped it to take over, forming the Conglomerate.Īfter the Riots, after Faith's parents were killed along with many members of the movement, Noah took to the rooftops as a runner while Rebecca was left to gather the pieces. This movement was led by Faith's parents, Noah, and Rebecca Thane. In Catalyst, before the Riots, there was a unified resistance movement mostly using peaceful means to oppose the decaying and corrupt quasi-democratic government. KrugerSec is content to let them be, so long as they "behave" and don't offer any real resistance against the system.īoth games feature the November Riots as a pivotal event when things got really worse. They are not just couriers, they are also thieves, saboteurs, and spies. Why? Because runners provide a vital service to everyone from the lowest employs to even the ruling elite. Sure, KrugerSec has standing orders to hunt down any runners, but these are frequently ignored. In Glass, they are neither a resistance movement, nor something the Conglomerate wants to destroy. In Glass, runners are in a substantially different position than runners of the original City. They are an imperfection, something the City seek to stamp out forever. Runners are a small minority of individuals who lead double lives and work to ensure that resistance against the regime lives on. In The City, the totalitarian government is on the verge of stamping out last vestiges of resistance.
